Siena Water Polo (4-7, 1-0 MAAC) earned a historic 15–11 victory over Long Island University (6-15, 0-2 MAAC) on Saturday in Villanova, PA, marking the program's first-ever win against LIU after entering the day 0-8 in the all-time series. The Saints capitalized on six power-play goals to help maintain control throughout the contest.
The victory also marks the second straight season Siena has opened MAAC play with a 1-0 record.
Catherine Williamson paced Siena with seven goals.
Rebecca Currie added four, while
Lucia Fernandez Caballero and
Jade Arnold each scored twice.
Savana Slaughter earned the win in goal.
The teams battled in a tightly contested matchup that featured multiple momentum swings. LIU struck first with a goal from Julia Allen in the opening quarter, but the Saints quickly responded as Fernandez Caballero and Arnold scored to keep pace, with Arnold adding a second goal to help Siena stay even.
The second quarter continued the back-and-forth action. Currie scored consecutive goals to push Siena ahead 6–5 before LIU answered to keep the game within reach. Greta Tadday later tied the contest at 8–8, but Williamson scored just before halftime to give the Saints a 9–8 lead heading into the break.
Siena gradually pulled away in the second half, and Williamson sealed the victory with two more goals in the final quarter as the Saints secured the 15–11 win.
The Saints return to action Sunday, Mar. 15, at 9 a.m. when they face Iona at the Villanova Swim Complex in Villanova, PA.
