Siena Water Polo (5-7, 2-0 MAAC) earned a 19-16 overtime victory over Iona (7-14, 0-3 MAAC) in Villanova, PA, on Sunday, marking the program's second-ever win over the Gaels and its first 2-0 start in MAAC play in program history.
The Saints capitalized on special teams throughout the contest, converting nine power-play opportunities, while their 19 goals marked a season high and matched the program's highest single-game total since scoring 19 against VMI on April 7, 2024.
Quincy Frommelt and
Catherine Williamson powered the Siena offense with five goals each, while
Rebecca Currie added four goals and
Jade Arnold chipped in three.
Iona jumped out to an early advantage in the opening quarter, as Lola Trujillo and Sadie Sallas helped the Gaels build a 3-0 lead. Siena quickly answered, with Frommelt and Currie each scoring twice, cutting the deficit to 4-3 by the end of the first period.
The Gaels regained momentum early in the second quarter when Sallas and Grace Goldhammer pushed the lead to 6-3. Despite a penalty goal from Williamson and continued offensive pressure from the Saints, Iona maintained control and carried a 10-6 lead into halftime.
Siena turned the tide in the second half, mounting a sustained offensive surge led by Frommelt and Williamson, who combined for multiple goals during the rally. The Saints' efficiency on the power play and balanced scoring attack allowed them to erase the deficit and pull ahead late, ultimately securing the 19-16 victory.
Siena will return to action on Saturday, Mar. 21, when the Saints face Wagner at 3 p.m. at McCann Natatorium in Poughkeepsie, NY.
