Saints Sweep Canisius Behind Goewey’s Dominance, Late-Game Heroics

Siena rides complete-game gem in opener before six-run sixth inning fuels 8-7 comeback win

Siena Softball (12-9, 5-3 MAAC) powered through a strong doubleheader sweep of Canisius (5-14, 1-6 MAAC) at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, NY, taking game one convincingly, 6-1, before mounting a late rally to secure an 8-7 win in the nightcap.

Siena 6, Canisius 1
Gracie Goewey delivered a dominant performance in the circle, striking out 10 and allowing just two hits and one run in a complete-game effort. The junior was in full control down the stretch, retiring 15 of the final 16 batters she faced across 119 pitches.

Offensively, Megan Klein set the tone with three hits, three runs scored, and a double. Emma Petersen added two hits and an RBI, while Chloe Cummings contributed a hit, RBI, and a key sacrifice bunt.

Siena jumped out early, using Klein's leadoff single to spark a first-inning run on Petersen's RBI base hit. The Saints broke the game open in the third, plating four runs behind Gianna DiMeglio's two-RBI double to extend the lead to 5-1. Klein later doubled and came around to score in the fourth, and Goewey took care of the rest as Siena cruised to the 6-1 victory.

Siena 8, Canisius 7
The Saints completed the sweep with a gritty comeback, erupting for six runs in the sixth inning to flip a late deficit into a one-run win.

Chloe Cummings led the charge with a clutch double and three RBI, while Cali DeLawder delivered the biggest swing of the day—a go-ahead three-run home run. Goewey added two hits and a run scored, and Petersen chipped in with an RBI.

Trailing 4-2 entering the sixth, Siena ignited its rally with a leadoff single from Goewey. DeLawder followed with a three-run blast to give the Saints the lead, and Cummings and Petersen each added RBI hits to cap the six-run surge and make it 8-6.

Canisius answered with a two-run homer in the bottom half and added another run in the seventh to tighten things up, but Siena held on to complete the 8-7 win.

In the circle, Violet Marta logged 4.2 innings with five strikeouts, while Goewey returned in relief to help close out the victory.

The Saints return to Loudonville for their home opener on Saturday, Mar. 28, hosting Saint Peter's in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
