SYRACUSE, NY — An early 3-0 deficit put the Siena Women's Lacrosse team in catch up mode as the Saints traded goals for the remainder and were defeated 10-7 on the road Saturday at Le Moyne's Ted Grant Field.
The Saints' offense managed 18 shots on goal out of 29 attempts, but could not overcome the Dolphins' defensive play as Dolphins' goalkeeper Amanda Manfredi made 11 saves.
The Saints also lost the turnover battle 17-12 despite gaining advantages in shots (29-23), shots on goal (18-16) and draw controls (12-7).
The game began with Julia Blakeslee of the Dolphins securing the draw control and scoring the first goal with an assist from Alexa Strelick at 14:01.
Le Moyne extended its lead with a goal from Francesca Tortora, assisted by Maddi Barney, at 11:35. Emily Markovina added another for the Dolphins, assisted by Bella Sampo, at 9:01, prompting a timeout by the Saints.
Elizabeth Wamp broke through for the Saints with a free position goal at 1:46, closing the quarter with Le Moyne leading 3-1.
In the second quarter, Le Moyne's Maddi Barney put the team ahead with a goal at 11:23, assisted by Francesca Tortora.
The Saints responded with
Cassidy Morrow scoring at 8:42, assisted by
Jenna Pollicino, followed by a free position goal from
Avery Connolly at 7:34.
However, Le Moyne regained momentum with a free-position goal by Blakeslee at 3:20. Olivia Lockwood extended the Dolphins' lead to 6-3 with a woman-up goal at 0:32, assisted again by Tortora.
The quarter ended with Le Moyne holding a three-goal advantage.
In the third quarter, the Dolphins extended their lead with a goal by Strelick at 13:02, marking her sixth of the season.
The Saints responded with a goal from
Koehler Nieman at 9:58, assisted by
Lauren O'Hagan, bringing Nieman's season total to five. Le Moyne's Olivia Lockwood then scored at 7:57, prompting a timeout from the Saints.
The quarter concluded with O'Hagan scoring at 2:58, assisted by Connolly, to bring the Saints within three goals.
The score at the end of the quarter was 8-5 in favor of the Dolphins.
The fourth quarter saw Olivia Lockwood of Le Moyne score twice, both on woman-up opportunities, including a goal just six seconds before the quarter ended.
O'Hagan responded early in the quarter with a goal at 13:00, assisted by
Avery Connolly, followed by a goal from
Cassidy Bonura at 6:19, assisted by
Kaitlin Bogucki.
Despite these efforts, the Saints ran out of time. Manfredi made crucial saves including a free position shot by
Olivia Nicholson at the 1:00 mark.
The Saints dropped to 5-2 while Le Moyne improved to 5-1 this season.
Next up, Siena will travel to Smithfield, RI to play Rhode Island (2-5) this Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. on the campus of Bryant University at Beirne Stadium while URI's facilities at Meade Stadium are still under renovation.
