Women’s Lacrosse Comeback Attempt Falls Short in OT to The Mount

Saints reeled off six consecutive goals to force extra frame

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. — The Siena Women's Lacrosse team reeled off six consecutive goals to take a one-goal lead with 9:22 remaining in regulation on a score by Elizabeth Wamp, but Mount St. Mary's was able to even it on a goal by Morgan Ortega to send the game into overtime before the MAAC's leading scorer Brooke Molchanoff notched the sudden victory goal with 3:31 left in overtime to lift the Mountaineers over the Saints 11-10 in overtime on Wednesday at Hickey Field.

Siena (6-6 overall, 1-3 MAAC) had won four straight overtime games over the past five plus seasons with a pair of wins against Canisius in 2024 and in 2021 and one each against Dartmouth in 2023 and Marist in 2021.

Mount St. Mary's (8-4, 4-0 MAAC) was backed by a game-high four goals from Molchanoff and two from MK Allingham. Molchanoff now leads the MAAC in scoring with 59 points including 43 goals.

Siena's strong comeback started in the third quarter. After the Mount's Ava Kraszewski initially extended the lead for the visitors with a free position goal at 12:03, the Saints responded with a series of goals, starting with Hailey Deptula's score at 6:59. Cassidy Bonura and Elizabeth Wamp each added goals, with Wamp capitalizing on a free position shot at 4:28. Despite several attempts, the Mountaineers struggled to regain momentum, allowing Siena to close the gap to a 9-7 score by the end of the third quarter.

Siena continued its' surge in the fourth quarter with a goal by Koehler Nieman, assisted by Sara Curley at 12:02. Moments later, Deptula scored at 10:22, followed by a goal from Wamp at 9:22, pushing the Saints ahead. Mount St. Mary's responded with a free position goal by Ortega at 6:20.

Despite a strong showing with a 29-17 shots advantage, 18-13 shots on goal advantage, and a 16-7 draw controls advantage, the Saints were unable to ride out the momentum over the final eight plus minutes of action.
Mount St. Mary's goalkeeper Camille Thomas played a crucial role in maintaining the lead. After Sydney Hannes won the draw control to begin overtime, Siena called timeout. Thomas made a save a shot by Wamp at 4:17 in overtime and finished with eight saves on the day.

To open the game, Bonura opened the scoring at 11:57, giving Siena the initial lead. However, Molchanoff responded with a goal at 9:35, leveling the score with assistance from Haylee Bittinger. Mount St. Mary's gained momentum with Molchanoff's unassisted goal at 6:42 and a free-position goal by Allingham at 4:27, taking a 3-2 lead. Olivia Nicholson tied it briefly for Siena with a goal assisted by Jenna Pollicino at 5:54, but Molchanoff's third goal at 1:12 secured a 4-2 advantage for the Mountaineers at the end of the first quarter.

Mount St. Mary's extended the lead in the second quarter with a goal by Bittinger at 14:08, assisted by Molchanoff. The Saints responded with a free position goal by Bonura at 9:59, briefly leveling the momentum. However, the Mountaineers capitalized on a player-up opportunity with Allingham scoring at 9:15. Despite a goal from Sara Curley pulling Siena closer at 8:43, Peyton Sims extended Mount St. Mary's lead with a free position goal at 3:12. The Mountaineers led 8-4 at the break.

Siena will be back in action this Saturday when it hosts Sacred Heart (4-7 overall, 3-1 MAAC) at 1 p.m.
