LOUDONVILLE, NY — Behind another masterclass in the circle from
Gracie Goewey, Siena Softball (24-16, 15-9 MAAC) scratched across an early run and made it stand, blanking Merrimack (12-27, 10-16 MAAC) 1-0 on Saturday for a Senior Day win at Siena Softball Field.
Goewey was in complete control from the outset, spinning a one-hit shutout while striking out 10 over seven dominant innings. The junior issued just one walk and consistently worked ahead, firing 64 of her 102 pitches for strikes. The victory marked her 14th of the season and her seventh shutout—extending her own single-season program record and standing as the most shutouts by any pitcher in the MAAC this spring.
Siena manufactured the game's lone run in the opening frame.
Megan Klein sparked the rally with a bunt single and moved to third on
Emma Petersen's base hit and a wild pitch. With the bases loaded,
Gianna DiMeglio showed patience at the plate, drawing a walk to force in Klein and give the Saints a 1-0 edge they would not relinquish.
That was all the support Goewey needed. Merrimack's lone hit came in the middle innings, but the right-hander quickly erased any momentum, retiring the side and continuing to keep the Warriors off balance. Siena's defense backed her effort cleanly, preserving the narrow lead throughout.
At the plate, Klein finished with a hit, run scored, and walk, while
Chloe Cummings added a hit and a free pass. Petersen chipped in with a key single in the first-inning rally as Siena capitalized on its early opportunity in an otherwise tightly contested pitcher's duel.
Siena returns to action on Tuesday, Apr. 28, traveling to Syracuse to face Le Moyne for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
