Anthony Spataro enters his fourth season on the Siena Baseball staff. Spataro was promoted to the team's hitting coach in September 2019.
"Coach Spataro continues to work hard with our players and I know he will continue to help our hitters improve, as he has done all Fall," said head coach Tony Rossi upon Spataro's elevation. "I'm happy that he will be our offensive leader!"
Previously, he was responsible for overseeing Siena’s team defense as well as assisting the hitters.
“Anthony is a talented young coach, and he has a bright career ahead of him,” said head coach Tony Rossi upon Spataro's hiring. “He has a lot of energy, is highly motivated, and possesses a great personality. He’s been a high profile instructor in the Capital Region, and has established strong relationships with the local high schools.”
In Spataro's second season with the Saints in 2019, he aided in the development of a Siena defense which posted a .963 fielding percentage, which was just three percentage points shy of the program record set the previous year under Spataro's watch. He also helped develop outfielder Ryan McGee into a MAAC All-Rookie Team selection.
In Spataro's first season with the program in 2018, he aided in the development of three All-MAAC hitters including junior shortstop Marcos Campos who was selected in the 29th Round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the San Francisco Giants. Spataro aided in the development of a Siena defense which set a program record with a .966 fielding percentage, and saw all returning position players increase their individual fielding percentages from the previous year.
Spataro matriculates to Siena following a two-year stint as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Division III SUNY Brockport. He helped guide the Golden Eagles to a 46-35 overall record the past two seasons, and was instrumental in the development of seven All-Conference selections including the 2017 Brockport Freshman Student Athlete of the Year.
Spataro also coached locally the past two summers as an assistant with the Amsterdam Mohawks of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League, which he helped lead to a 76-29 record and the 2016 league championship. During his tenure, nine Mohawks were named PGCBL All-Stars, one was named the PGCBL Player of the Year, and one was tabbed the league’s top prospect.
Spataro began his coaching career as a student assistant coach at the College of Charleston for the 2015 season where he worked predominantly with the infielders, namely 2015 Colonial Athletic Association Player and Defensive Player of the Year Blake Butler. The Cougars posted a 45-15 record that spring which included 21 league victories, advanced to the Tallahassee Regional Final as the No. 2 seed, and finished the season ranked 18th nationally.
Spataro is a 2016 graduate of The College at Brockport with a degree in Kinesiology, and is finishing his graduate studies in Athletic Administration. His parents, Tom Sr. & Rosemary Spataro both graduated from Siena in 1987, while his great uncle graduated in 1967 and was a member of the men's lacrosse team for one season.
