Abigail Rehfuss

Abigail Rehfuss will be entering her seventh season at the helm of the Siena Saints Women's Lacrosse program in 2024. Named the 2021 MAAC Coach of the Year, Rehfuss stands as the program's all-time leader in wins (53), winning percentage (.564) and in MAAC winning percentage (.651). Rehfuss signed a contract extension in the summer of 2022 to remain at the helm of the Saints through the 2026 season.

In six years at the helm of the Saints, Rehfuss has guided the Saints to the MAAC Championship game three times (2019, 2021, and 2023), producing 25 All-MAAC selections over her tenure. She has helped produce two MAAC Players of the Year in Sammy Horton (Goalkeeper, 2019) and Nicole McNeely (Offensive, 2022) as well as the 2023 MAAC Preseason Player of the Year Mary Soures and the 2018 MAAC Rookie of the Year Kerry Gerety.

In 2023, three Saints were named as All-MAAC selections. The Unanimous All-MAAC Preseason Player of the Year and fifth-year midfielder/attack Mary Soures was named to the First Team on attack, senior defense Jenna Colabufo was named as a First Team Defense selection while redshirt sophomore Jordan Bentley was named to the All-MAAC Second Team on attack.  Soures was also chosen for the IWLCA Senior All-Star Game played in Sparks, MD, after re-establishing the program all-time mark in goals scored with 189.  The team earned a program-record eight MAAC Player of the Week honors and equaled the most single-season wins in the program's history with 12, tying the mark it set under Rehfuss in the 2019 season.

Academically, the program tied a single-season high with 20 student-athletes on the MAAC All-Academic Team and five student-athletes on the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team, which recognized Hannah Field, Grace Dobrzynski, Colabufo, Bentley, and Kelly Logue.  Additionally, Laura Bonomo was named an Arthur Ashe Junior Sports Scholar.  As a whole, the team achieved a spring cumulative GPA of 3.65.

In 2022, Siena played host to the MAAC Championships for the first time in program history as they held a share of the MAAC Regular Season Championship for the first time in 17 years.

In 2021, she would lift the Saints to an 11-3 record, putting up the highest single-season win percentage in program history (.786) while also setting a program-record with eight straight victories through the MAAC Semifinals. For a fourth straight season under Rehfuss, the Saints earned IWLCA academic awards, with 2022 being the most successful to date. The Saints would put 15 individuals on the Division I Honor Roll - the largest group in program history while putting up a team cumulative GPA of 3.67.

Despite the 2020 season being unexpectedly shortened, Rehfuss guided the Saints to non-conference victories over Columbia, Holy Cross and Wagner to start off her third year at the helm. The team finished the year ranked second in the nation in fewest turnovers per-game and the MAAC leaders in clearing percentage. The team also set a program record for most selections to the MAAC All-Academic Team and the highest team GPA of any Siena program.

Rehfuss brought the Saints from a one-win MAAC team in her first season in 2018 to a new program record 12 wins in 2019 and a win away from the program's first MAAC Championship. Under Rehfuss in 2019, the Green and Gold had seven selected to All-MAAC teams, including the program's most-tenured goalie Sammy Horton, who earned MAAC Goalkeeper of the Year and First Team honors. The Saints produced the second biggest turnaround in the country behind only Michigan and Syracuse in wins from 2018 to 2019.

Also in 2019 under Rehfuss, Gerety and McNeely would each break the single-season scoring record en route to the program's second appearance in the MAAC Championship game and first since 2005.

A native of nearby Latham, New York, Rehfuss was appointed the seventh head coach in program history on Oct. 16, 2017. She joined the Saints after serving as the varsity head coach locally at Shaker High School during the previous two years.

"We welcome Abigail to the Siena family," said Siena College Vice President and Director of Athletics John D'Argenio upon her hiring. "She brings an outstanding lacrosse background to Siena that includes national honors as a student athlete, and success as a coach. She is a great addition to the Siena community and the athletic department."

Rehfuss amassed a 23-10 overall record at Shaker and was named the 2016 Times Union Coach of the Year after guiding the Blue Bison to the Section II Class A Championship in just her first season at the helm. Shaker achieved a 14-3 overall record in 2016 and advanced to the Class A State Quarterfinals after ousting top seed and defending champion Guilderland in the Section II Class A Championship Game.

Rehfuss previously served as the varsity head coach locally at Bethlehem Central High School in 2014. She began her coaching career in the collegiate ranks as an assistant coach at Division III Roger Williams in 2012. Rehfuss also served as a head coach for the Albany Elite Lacrosse Club for eight years before founding her own lacrosse club, 518 eXcelerate in 2020.

Rehfuss starred collegiately at Loyola University Maryland where she was named an IWLCA Second Team All-American, an All-Big East First Team and All-Tournament Team selection, and a Tewaaraton Award Watch list candidate after leading the Greyhounds to a program record-tying 17 wins, Big East Tournament Championship, and an NCAA Quarterfinals appearance in 2011. A two-time team captain, she received IWLCA All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors four times, and achieved All-Big East Second Team acclaim twice. Rehfuss, who was selected to participate in the prestigious North-South Senior All-Star Game in 2011, was the recipient of Loyola University Maryland's Medal of Merit for her outstanding academic and athletic excellence.

Rehfuss recorded 177 career points on 127 goals and 50 assists, and ranks fourth all-time in Loyola history with 153 draw controls. Rehfuss, who started all 71 games she played at midfield for the Greyhounds, also picked up 107 ground balls and caused 65 turnovers. She twice led Loyola in draw controls (2009, 2010), and paced the squad with 15 assists as a freshman in 2008.

Rehfuss also played professionally in the United Women's Lacrosse League for the Philadelphia Force and the Boston Storm.

No stranger to Siena, she comes from a long list of Siena graduates in her family. She became a third generation Saint, as her father, Steve Rehfuss, and grandfather John Rehfuss are both Siena graduates. Her grandfather John, a former men's basketball player and 1942 graduate, was inducted into the Siena Athletics Hall of Fame in 1979. Her grandfather, Tom Walsh, uncles Peter Walsh and Jack Rehfuss, and aunt Sheila Hepp (Walsh) are also Siena graduates.

Rehfuss received her B.A. in Interdisciplinary Writing & Philosophy from Loyola University Maryland in 2011, and her J.D. from Albany Law School in 2014. She has served as an attorney at The Rehfuss Law Firm, P.C. since 2015. Rehfuss was inducted into her alma mater Shaker High School's Hall of Fame in 2015, and also earned an induction into the Empire North Lacrosse Association Hall of Fame in October of 2021.
