BURLINGTON, Vt. - The University of Vermont field hockey team scored two early first half goals and hung on the rest of the way to earn a 2-1 victory over Siena in a non-conference contest this afternoon.
Junior co-captain Sara Mercanti (Clarks Green, PA) put back her own rebound in a scramble just three minutes into the game to put UVM up 1-0. Teammate Katie Henry (Brewster, NY) finished off a feed from Mercanti at 25:41 to give the Catamounts a 2-0 lead.
Siena answered when Lacee Iselo (Rome, NY) scored on a break-away with 7:01 left in the half, but that was all the offense the Saints could produce. In the second half, Ashley Smaldon (Rome, NY) had a chance to tie up the game, but her penalty stroke was stopped by UVM keeper Holly Colberg (Mohegan Lake, NY) in the 24th minute.
Colberg finished the game with just two saves, while Kristen Heyde (Somers, NY) made 11 stops for Siena (3-8).
Siena returns to the field on October 13th to face Quinnipiac at Saints Field in Loudonville for a 3pm face off.
