LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Sophomore Ashley Smaldon (Rome, N.Y./Rome Free Academy) scored both Siena ((2-4/2-2 NEC)goals as the Saints defeated the University of Maryland-Baltimore County (1-5/1-2 NEC) in Field Hockey action at Siena Field today.
Smaldon put the Saints on the board just 14 minutes into the game, scoring off an assist by Lacee Iselo (Rome, N.Y./Holland Pattent). Smaldon's second tally, a redirection on a Terry Cordes (Windsor, N.Y./Windsor) shot from the top of the circle, broke a 1-1 tie with 17 minutes remaining in the game.
Melissa Bragg (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) scored off her own rebound in front of the cage four minutes earlier for the lone UMBC goal.
Each goalie was solid, as Siena's Kristen Heyde (Somers, N.Y./Somers) registered eight saves en route to the victory, and the Retrievers' Karalyn Krieger (Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) stopped 12 shots in defeat.
Siena returns to action on Saturday at Sacred Heart. Game-time is set for noon.
