Saints Tie 16th-Ranked Rhode Island

Sept. 4, 2001

KINGSTON, R.I. - Siena posted a 2-2 tie against 16th-ranked University of Rhode Island in the final game of the URI/Wakefield Mall Classic at the URI Soccer Complex on Monday afternoon. In a game earlier in the day, Quinnipiac defeated Maine 1-0. Quinnipiac finished the tournament with a perfect 2-0 record while Rhode Island as 1-0-1, Siena 0-1-1 and Maine 0-2.

Rhode Island and Siena battled through a scoreless 82 minutes before Siena got on the board. Sophomore Sean Thompson collected a loose ball in front of the goal after a free kick from Siena to give the Saints a 1-0 lead at the 82:03 mark. Rhode Island would respond quickly, however, as senior Dennis Richards headed in a cross from fellow senior Ahmad Manning at 82:32 to knot the game at 1-1. The Saints regained the lead when senior Kevin Purcell collected a pass from freshman C.J. Melilli at the top of the box and slipped the ball into the net for the 2-1 lead at 84:51. In the 86th minute, the Rams were awarded a corner that Richards sent into the box where it was deflected off a Siena defender to tie the game at 2-2 at the 86:15 mark. The two teams battled through a pair of 15-minute overtime periods before the game ended in a deadlock.

Rhode Island out shot Siena by a 27-9 margin in the tie. Sophomore Michael Charles made two saves in goal for the Rams while sophomore Ryan Jordan had 10 stops for Siena.
