ALBANY, N.Y. - Swingman Sam Spann led all scorers with 20 points as Fairfield defeated Siena 60-57 in front of 6,397 fans at Pepsi Arena Saturday afternoon. Dwayne Archbold's three-point attempt to tie the game at the buzzer missed just long.
Fairfield began the game on an 8-0 run and built as much as an 11-point first half advantage behind the efforts of Spann. Spann closed the aforementioned run with two breakaway dunks forcing an early Siena timeout.
Tyguawn Goode's three-pointer gave the Stags a 47-38 lead with just under 10 minutes remaining in the game. With their backs against the wall, the Saints responded with a 10-0 run to take their initial lead, 48-47, moments later. Sophomore Justin Miller's second three-pointer of the game finished off the run. Miller finished with a season-high 17 points to pace the Saints.
The lead bounced back-and-forth for the next few minutes before Kudjo Sogadzi converted a free throw that gave the Stags the lead for good with just over a minute remaining. The Stags played solid defense to get the ball back with a one-point lead forcing the Saints to foul. After making one-of-two free throw shots on consecutive possessions, Fairfield built a three-point advantage. Archbold's three was an off-balance, well-guarded attempt hurried by the game clock.
Spann and Miller were the only two players in double figures.
The Saints return to action Wednesday evening at conference-leading Rider.
