LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Junior Lauren Weber (Sayville, N.Y./Connetquot) recorded 20 kills in just 36 attempts to pace Siena's (2-4) upset victory over the University of Maine at the Alumni Recreation Center Sunday afternoon.
Siena jumped out to an early lead, winning the first two games 30-25 and 30-24. The Saints held what appeared to be a commanding 20-11 lead in the third game, but the Black Bears rallied to score a 30-28 comeback win. Siena took the decisive fourth game 30-27. Weber's offensive explosion was aided by the efforts of classmate Katie Sarkovics (North Tonowanda, N.Y./North Tonowanda) who added seven kills while connecting on 38% of her total attacks.
Claire Poliquin and Leah Guidinger each tallied 11 kills in defeat for Maine. The Black Bears struggled offensively recording a 19% hitting efficiency. The Saints controlled the tempo and the action at the net as evidenced by their 18-11 advantage in team blocks.
Maine was coming off back-to-back wins over MAAC opponents Niagara and Canisius in Buffalo this weekend. The Black Bears also had defeated conference co-favorite Saint Peter's earlier this season.
Siena returns to the hardwood Wednesday evening against Army at 7 p.m. Members of the Siena College ROTC unit will be on hand to present the national colors in a special pregame ceremony remembering those who lost their lives in the tragic events of September 11, 2001.
