Men's Soccer Shuts Out Loyola 4-0

Oct. 16, 2005

Final Stats

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Siena (3-8-1, 1-1-1) scored early and often in handing the Loyola Greyhounds (5-7-1, 3-1-0) their first conference loss 4-0 at Siena Field on a blustery Sunday afternoon.

Siena's first goal came in the 16th minute, Caio Silva's (Sao Paulo, Brazil) corner kick from the right corner skimmed through the box to the left crossbar where Mike DeSimone (Clifton Park, N.Y.) one timed a shot into the undefended net. That was DeSimone's first goal of the season and Silva's second assist.

In the 27th minute, junior Matt Walsh (Northport, N.Y.) corralled a loose ball at the top of the box and blasted his first goal of the season to give the Saints a little breathing room.

The Green and Gold added one more goal before the intermission to make it 3-0, this performance ties for the highest scoring half of the season (9/6). In the 38th minute a clearing kick slipped behind the Loyola defensive line allowing Nick D'Allasandro (West Hempstead, N.Y.) a breakaway opportunity. Dribbling it in to just shy of the box area, where he was met by goalie Justin Chellan, the freshman displayed good ball control in firing a shot into the lower right third of the goal for a 3-0 cushion.

After the intermission, the Saints tacked on one final goal with less than eight minutes remaining. Jason Laffin (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) centered a pass to Sean Kelly (Red Hook, N.Y.) who ripped a shot from just outside the box and a sliding Silva redirected the shot into the net giving the Saints a 4-0 lead. Silva finished with a goal and an assist for three points.

Junior Patrick Henry (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) recorded his third shutout of the season and made three saves in the victory.

Siena outshot Loyola 12-7 despite the Greyhounds getting five shots off in the second half compared to the Saints four. In all, 37 fouls were called during a physically played contest.

In the three wins this season, the Green and Gold have yet to allow a goal.

The Saints hit the road for a Western New York swing with league games against Niagara, Oct. 21, and Canisius, Oct. 23, before traveling to Poughkeepsie to play rival Marist on Oct. 29. Siena next returns home on Nov. 4 as they host the Iona Gaels with a 2 p.m. start time.
