Holy Cross Knocks Off Siena Field Hockey 5-1

Juniors Laura Cohen and Tara Welch each scored two goals and senior Jenna Cook added another to lead the Holy Cross field hockey team to a 5-1 win over Siena Tuesday night at the Hart Astro Turf. Holy Cross is 1-0 (0-0 Patriot League), while the Saints fall to 0-2 (0-0 NEC).

The Crusaders opened the scoring at the 16:39 mark when Cohen blasted a shot by Saints' goalie Carlee Evans for the 1-0 lead on one of the nine penalty corners Holy Cross had in the first half. Both Welch and junior Susie Whelan were credited with the assist on the play.

Holy Cross then took a 2-0 lead into the break after Cook tapped in a pass from Whelan with less than 11 minutes remaining in the half. The home team was able to break the game open with its third goal of the night when Cohen made good on an unassisted shot at the top of the circle in the 42nd minute.

Welch scored the final two Holy Cross goals of the night. The final tally came with just four seconds remaining as the junior forward snuck a shot behind Evans off of a penalty corner.

The lone Siena goal was scored by Danielle Weill with less than eight minutes to play after a scuffle in front of the HC net.

The Crusaders out shot the Saints, 25-4 and enjoyed a 15-2 penalty corner advantage on the evening.

HC goalkeeper Sony Kuhn made one save in the contest while Evans came up with 13 saves.
