Final Stats
Junior Alex Kyzmir deflected in two penalty corners in the second half to break open a 2-2 game as Bucknell topped Siena in field hockey action 5-2 at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs Saturday night. Freshman Carli Atkinson and senior Lori Barletta each found the back of the cage for the Saints.
Siena (0-5) jumped out to a 1-0 lead just over 20 minutes into live action, as Atkinson corralled a rebound and fired the ball into the back right of the cage. Just over a minute later, Bucknell (2-3) got on the board as Kelly O'Brien scored her first of two goals. O'Brien's tally also came on a rebound opportunity following a slick defensive save by junior Lauren Mecchella.
The score remained knotted at 1-1 as the first half came to a close.
Bucknell took a 2-1 lead less than 10 minutes into the second half when Anne Lutz took a pass from Kyzmir on the right side and directed the ball into an empty cage . The Saints responded to tie the game less than a minute later as Barletta took a pass from teammate Kathleen Brennan, drifted inside the circle and rifled a shot off keeper Liz Jordan's knee pad.
The Bison broke open an otherwise even game in the second half of the final stanza, controlling the action in their end for almost all of the game's final 20 minutes. The game winning goal came on a perfectly executed corner as Kyzmir centered the ball to teammate Carli Cataldo who set the ball for Amanda Faust. Faust then fired the ball back to Kyzmir who beat Siena keeper Jennifer Tesak for Bucknell's third goal.
Tesak was sharp in the cage for Siena making six saves. She kept the Saints within striking distance for most of the night.
Three minutes after Kyzmir's first goal, Bucknell again took advantage of one of their 11 penalty corners. The same trio combined to do the damage, as Kyzmir just got her stick on Faust's entry pass to deflect the ball past Tesak.
Bucknell scored its final goal of the game on a penalty shot after Mecchella again made a stellar defensive save, but was ruled to have touched the ball with her body. O'Brien recorded her second goal of the game on the penalty opportunity, scoring in the top left of the cage.
The Bison out-shot Siena 21-9 and held an 11-1 edge in penalty corners. Still, Siena played with much more energy on this night and had its opportunities.
The Saints return to action Wednesday at Colgate.
