Quinnipiac Knocks Off Siena Field Hockey 3-0

Sept. 23, 2005

Final Stats

The Quinnipiac University field hockey team opened its new artificial turf field with a 3-0 shutout of Siena College in a Northeast Conference matchup between the two clubs. The win was the third in a row for the Bobcats, now 5-3 and 2-0 in NEC action.

The Bobcats opened the scoring just 6:29 into the contest. Megan DeCesaris fired a pass from the top of the circle to teammate Danielle Avenoso, who was standing in the middle in the circle. Avenoso stopped the ball and fired a quick turnaround shot for her first goal of the year.

Quinnipiac maintained pressure throughout the first half and held a 10-1 advantage in the shot department. However, the Saints were able to keep it a 1-0 game heading into halftime.

Siena's best scoring chance came early in the second half with the game still 1-0 in favor of Quinnipiac. The Saints had a bid off a penalty corner that beat goalie Erin McKay, but defender Jillian Holod cleared the ball off the line to keep the Bobcats in front.

A few minutes later, Quinnipiac tacked on some insurance. The Bobcats executed some tight passing from in close on a penalty corner, culminating on Amy Cunniff's goal from the side of the cage. Jillian Carroll assisted on the goal.

The hosts added one more goal for good measure with just over 16 minutes to play. Avenoso and Ann Marie Mangano broke out on an odd-man rush in the Siena end. Avenoso pulled the goalie out of the cage before sliding a pass to Mangano, who tipped the ball into an empty cage.

McKay finished with five saves in goal and registered her third shutout of the season.

Siena returns to action Sunday at NEC foe Sacred Heart.
