Poughkeepsie, N.Y.- The Siena women's basketball (7-9, 3-4) came out sharp and held the lead for most of the first half but came up short in a second half Marist (12-4, 7-0) surge in securing the team's 12th straight victory 61-39 today at the McCann Center.
Siena's senior class served notice early that Marist's 11-game winning streak didn't assure them of a victory against the Saints. Lauren Surber and Whitney Cave combined to toss in 16 points and grabbed 9 first half rebounds in helping the Green and Gold take a lead into halftime. The seniors combined to hit 8-of-11 shots in the first half with Surber hitting on all five of her shots showing the entire repertoire.
All the damage was done with Siena's leading scorer, Laura Menty, sidelined due to foul trouble and held to just four minutes of action. Senior Emily Clark kept the sizzling upperclassmen display holding down the middle formidably against the league's highest scoring frontcourt tandem in Fifi Camara and Meg Dahlman. The duo who came into the game averaging 27.8 ppg, were held to 4-of-15 shooting for eight points.
Marist showed poise, after trailing 18-9 with 4:31 to play before the break, in closing the half on a 11-4 run to make the game a one bucket contest. Siena had a nice run of their own in the half, leading 8-7, The Green and Gold outscored the Foxes 10-2 including holding Marist without a bucket for six and a half minutes.
Unfortunately, the team's strength in the first half became its Achilles heal. The one-two punch of Camara and Dahlman got going after the intermission as the duo connected on 12-of-14 second half shots to lead the Red Foxes to a 41-point second half explosion. Camara hit all seven of her second half shots to finish with 22 points and 15 rebounds.
The Green and Gold were led by Lauren Surber's 13 points and Whitney Cave fell shy of another double-double, finishing with 10 points and nine caroms.
The Saints, who shot 42% in the first half, were held to just a 25% shooting average after the break. Siena was 1-for-10 on perimeter shots in their first televised loss of the year (2-1).
The Green and Gold will have a chance to improve that television record on Sunday as they conclude this road trip with a 12 p.m. tipoff against the Loyola Greyhounds in Maryland.
