SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Four separate Rhode Island players scored a goal and Rhody out-shot Siena 23-7, en-route to a 4-0 victory over the Saints at College Park on the campus of Union College Sunday. With the loss, the Saints now drop to 1-7 overall, while the Rams improve to 4-4.
After 15 minutes of stagnant play offensively, the Rams scored the game's first goal when sophomore Christine Kazmierski fired a shot into the cage after receiving the ball off of a rebound. Kazmierski's unassisted goal gave the Rams a 1-0 lead. Seven minutes later at the 22:34 mark, junior Jeannie Records made the score 2-0 after firing the ball past Saints goalkeeper Renee Clavette (Danville, N.H./Timberland) on a loose-ball opportunity.
With just five seconds remaining in the first half, sophomore defender Laura Hackenberger sent Rhody into halftime with a three-goal lead when she scored off of a feed from teammate Jamie Adams on a penalty corner.
With Jennifer Tesak (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford) in at goal in replace of Clavette, the Rams continued to be steadfast offensively, scoring their final goal at the 42:03 mark, when junior Jen Cetenich broke free on a breakaway and fired the ball into the left corner of the cage. With a 4-0 lead intact, the Rams' defense held off the Siena attack, as Rhode Island laid claim to a four-goal victory.
For the Saints, senior defender Carly Demartis (Somers, N.Y./North Salem) registered her first defensive save of the season, while fellow senior Lauren Mecchella (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) attempted her first shot of the year, representing one of the Saints' seven attempted shots on the day.
Splitting halves in the cage for Siena, Clavette tallied eight saves, while Tesak finished the game with seven. Clavette's eight-save performance increases her season total to 58.
The Saints will square-off against Fairfield University on Friday in Fairfield, Conn. Game-time is slated for a 4 p.m. start.
