SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Sacred Heart had four separate players register goals Sunday afternoon, as the Pioneers claimed a 4-0 victory over the Siena Saints (2-12, 2-6) at a blustery College Park on the campus of Union College. Senior defenders Lauren Mecchella (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and Carly Demartis (Somers, N.Y./North Salem) were both honored for their four years of tireless effort before the contest as part of Senior Day.
The Pioneers (13-4, 5-2) jumped on the board 17 minutes into the first half when senior midfielder Colleen Carney received the ball off of an errant shot and fired it past Saints' goalkeeper Renee Clavette (Danville, N.H./Timberland) to give Sacred Heart a 1-0 lead. As time expired in the first half, the Pioneers exited the field with a 1-0 advantage over the Saints.
Sacred Heart kept their offense running early in the second half when sophomore Melissa Mazin gave the Pioneers a 2-0 lead when she scored off of a penalty corner. Carney was credited with the assist.
Sophomore Carissa Eye scored the game's third goal on behalf of the Pioneers at the 60:08 mark off of another penalty corner. Mazin fed her teammate the ball to earn the assist. The Pioneers bolstered the victory with five seconds remaining when senior forward Becky Ford shot the ball over an outstretched Jennifer Tesak (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford) to give the Pioneers a four-goal decision.
Panning across the stat line, the Saints attempted 14 shots in contrast to the Pioneers mark of 13. Splitting halves in the cage for Siena, both Clavette and Tesak amassed three saves for the Saints. Clavette ends her 2006 campaign with a team-leading 75 saves, while Tesak finished nine short of her teammate with 66 saves.
