Kenny Hasbrouck scored five of his game-high 22 points in the second overtime, including the go-ahead basket with 1:11 remaining to help Siena past cross-town rival UAlbany, 76-75, in double-overtime Saturday night. The Saints laid claim to the TIAA-CREF Albany Cup for the fifth time in six tries since the rivalry was renewed after 25 years in 2001.
Siena had chances to win the game in regulation and at the end of the first overtime, but Hasbrouck hit the side of the backboard from an off-angle shot and had his desperation half-court heave hit off the side of the rim at the end of the first extra session.
Jamar Wilson, who led UAlbany with 19 points and a career-high 11 rebounds, just misfired on a 25-foot jumper at the end of the second overtime.
Freshman Edwin Ubiles scored 10 of his career high 20 points in the first half, converting 2-of-3 3-pointers, to help Siena to a 34-30 half time lead. The Saints shot 52% from the field in the first half. Hasboruck made all three of his first half field goals, including two 3-pointers. His performance was especially impressive considering he was injected with two Intravenous before the game and one at halftime.
"Kenny's performance was very courageous," head coach Fran McCaffery said. "We didn't expect to have him a few hours before the game. He missed the walk-through and was nauseous all day."
Siena jumped out to a 39-32 lead on a 3-pointer by Ubiles with 17:26 left in the second half. It was the biggest lead for either team.
Jason Siggers hit back-to-back 3-pointers to start the first overtime session - after making just 1-of-7 3-pointers in regulation - to give the Great Danes their largest lead, 65-59, with 3:41 left in the initial OT. Trailing 69-65 with 1:56 left in the first overtime, Siena got a 3-pointer from Ubiles and a free throw from David Ryan to force the second extra session.
Siena's star Michael Haddix played just 20 minutes before fouling out. He scored just eight points. Ryan also had eight, but grabbed nine rebounds.
It was the second straight season the game went to overtime. Last year, Siena won 82-74 in one overtime.
The Saints continue their four-game homestand Wednesday when they open conference play against Niagara. UAlbany hosts VCU Wednesday.
