Jersey City, NJ - Siena College won the 2006 MAAC Women's Tennis Championship defeating Marist College 4-0 today at Saint Peter's College's Yanitelli Center. With the win, the Saints have earned the league's automatic berth to the 2006 NCAA Women's Tennis Championship.
Siena freshman Sarah Mayer was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player after she went 3-0 in singles play and 2-1 in doubles play.
The Saints jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after winning all three doubles matches to take the doubles point. Siena's duo of Meghan Slenkamp and Sugam Langer helped the Saints earn that lead, as they won the number three doubles match 8-4 over Mirelva Colon and Megan Gureck. The number one and two doubles matches finished nearly at the same time as Denisa Hluchova and Karina Davis won 8-5 at number two, while Sarah Mayer and Taylor Barvoets won 8-6 at number one.
Siena pushed their lead to 2-0 after Karina Davis defeated Megan Gureck 6-1, 6-1 at number four singles. Freshman Sarah Mayer gave the Saints a commanding 3-0 lead with her 6-4, 6-3 win at number one singles over Inge Le-Grange. A short while later, Siena would clinch the championship with Taylor Barvoets' 6-2, 6-3 win at number two singles over Yana Tikhonko.
The Saints now await the announcement of pairings for the 2006 NCAA Women's Tennis Championship. The announcement will be made on Wednesday, May 3 at 8:30 pm ET live on ESPNews.
