Siena`s women's lacrosse team started its conference match with Manhattan College strongly with three goals in the first 15 minutes, but the Lady Jaspers rallied for a 14-9 win Sunday in Loudonville. Jenny Carman and Molly Pheterson helped Manhattan take control of the game, combining for nine goals.
Siena sophomore Amy Schoonmaker started the scoring by posting a goal assisted by Lauren Ritchie four minutes into the game. Freshman Ryan Tierney netted two more goals to give the Saints a comfortable early 3-0 lead.
The Lady Jaspers responded quickly as Carman scored twice, cutting Manhattan's deficit to just one.
Saints' sophomore Lynn Harkins pushed the lead to 4-2 with an unassisted shot with 12:15 remaining in the first half.
Carman answered by netting a free position shot two minutes later, and after Lindsey Rosecrans scored another Siena goal, Carman countered again with her fourth score of the half.
Jillian McGowan and Molly Pheterson each scored in the final two minutes of the half to give Manhattan a 6-5 lead at the break.
After halftime, Rosecrans spun past defenders to tie the game 30 seconds into play. Pheterson took a pass from Carman in front of the net and beat Siena goalie Michelle Eide in the upper left corner to put the Lady Jaspers up for good.
After a foul by Siena's Niki Burger, Carman struck again with her fourth goal thanks to an assist from Alicia Psillos.
Junior Brenna Tinari opened up the lead when she scored the ninth Manhattan goal with 18 minutes remaining.
Each team scored three more times in the second half, with two of Siena's goals coming in the final two minutes. This mini-rally proved too late and Manhattan held on for the 14-9 win.
