Loudonville, N.Y. - The Siena College women's basketball team (3-13, 2-4) fell to Loyola (9-7, 4-2) 71-54 this afternoon at the Alumni Recreation Center. Sophomore guard Shondaya Burrell led the way for the Saints recording 14 points. Laura Menty, a junior forward, scored her 1,000th point becoming the 22nd player in program history to reach this milestone.
It was a seesaw battle throughout the first half as the two teams traded leads five times. Siena forward Heather Stec drained back-to-back baskets to give the Saints an 18-16 advantage with 4:39 remaining in the first half. This would be the last time Siena held the lead as Loyola took a 29-22 advantage into the half.
Freshman center Sarah Fullmer recorded eight of her 12 points in the first 20 minutes of action. This marks the third time this season Fullmer scored in double figures.
Katelyn Dooley sparked a Saints 5-0 run with a 3-pointer just 16 seconds into the second half cutting the Greyhounds lead to 29-27 with 17:21 remaining. Loyola responded with a 25-6 run of their own midway through the half to take a 21 point advantage with 6:42 left in the contest.
The Saints battled hard, but wouldn't get much closer as Loyola went on to earn their fourth conference victory of the season. Siena shot 10% from beyond the arc going 2-for-20 on the afternoon.
Junior center Vika Sholokhova led the charge for the Greyhounds with 16 points. Loyola guards Jill Glessner and Tynisha Davis chipped in 15 points apiece in the winning effort.
Menty finished with nine points and seven rebounds. She becomes just the ninth player in Siena history to join the program's 1,000 point club in her third year as a Saint. Menty stands 21st on the all-time list with 1,002 career points surpassing Cathy Rousseau '82 (1,001).
The Saints return to action on Friday when they take on Canisius at the Times Union Center as the first game of a double-header with the Siena men's basketball team. Tip time is set for 4:30 p.m. the contest will be televised on ESPNU.
