Senior captain Katelyn Dooley registered a game-high 16 points to lead Siena to a 64-54 victory over Canisius at Times Union Center Friday afternoon. Three of the Saints' starting five finished in double-digits as Melissa Manzer and sophomore guard Shondaya Burrell both finished with 14 points.
"I think today's game was a great win for us," head coach Gina Castelli said. "We had a great defensive first half and we did a good job stopping them (Canisius) overall."
Dooley sank two of her three 3-pointers early in the first half with the second coming with 10:10 remaining to give the Saints a 14-4 advantage. Sophomore guard Amanda Cavo put the Griffs back into the game, scoring all seven of her first-half points in a two-minute span to cut the Saints' deficit to four, 15-11. Following a Liga Alpa-Luka 3-point basket at the 6:03 mark which gave Siena a six point cushion, 20-14, the Saints scored five additional unanswered points capped off by freshman forward Sarah Fullmer's (Swansea, Mass./Joseph Case) conventional three-point play.
After entering the locker room with a 30-19 halftime advantage, the Saints increased their lead to as many as 17, 41-24, thanks in part to a Manzer jumper 12 seconds into the half and a Dooley 3-pointer at the 18:10 mark.
Canisius cut the lead to 51-47, but Manzer connected on back-to-back 3-pointers shortly after, including a fade away with 2:11 left that put the game away.
Siena held a 41-31 rebounding advantage, and did not allow the Griffs an offensive board until midway through the second half. The Saints held Canisius to just 39% from the floor for the game.
In a brief pre-game ceremony, junior forward Laura Menty was honored for eclipsing the 1,000 point barrier against Loyola last Sunday.
The Saints (4-13, 3-4) will travel to Jersey City, N.J. to square-off against the Saint Peter's Peahens on Sunday at 2 p.m.
