Loudonville, N.Y. - On Senior Day, Siena senior forward Hanna LeStrange (Worcester, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) notched the only goal of the game as the Saints sent out their seniors victorious in a 1-0 win over visiting Fairfield this afternoon at Siena Turf Field. Prior to the game, the Saints honored graduating seniors Danielle Weill, Anne Linley, Alicia Reagan, LeStrange, Emily Winslow and Traci Baldwin in a pre-game ceremony.
Siena (2-9) was able to strike for the decisive score just one minute and 59 seconds in when on a free ball from just outside the right of the circle, junior Rian Lively (Greenfield, Mass./Greenfield) made a tremendous stick-to-stick pass to LeStrange who fired home her second goal of the year to put the Saints on top.
Meanwhile the visiting Stags (2-13) would continue to fight back, creating numerous scoring opportunities without anything to show for it. This was a result of stellar play between the pipes all day long by junior goalkeeper Renee Clavette (Danville, N.H./Timberland) who turned aside all shots she faced in notching her first shutout of the season.
"She (Clavette) kept us in it and came up with some excellent saves," remarked Head Coach Bill Davidson. "It's tough for any goalie to face so few attempts during the course of the game and be able to stay on top of their game, but Renee was able to do so and make some great adjustments against their attack."
The Saints held a 13-7 shots advantage as well as an 8-4 edge in penalty corners. Along with LeStrange, sophomore Kristin McGorty (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./John Jay) led Siena's offensive charge with five total shots, two of which were on goal.
"(Winning the game) It was such a wonderful feeling for me, and I can't imagine how great a feeling it was for our seniors to go out this way," added Davidson. "There's nothing better for them and their parents, they deserve this."
Following the conclusion of their home slate, the Saints will take to the road for a three game trip beginning next Friday at Sacred Heart. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
