Loudonville, N.Y. - The Siena Field Hockey team dropped a hard fought 1-0 decision to Sacred Heart this afternoon at Campus Field in Fairfield, Conn. For the Saints, it ended their hopes of putting together their first winning streak of the season following a memorable Senior Day win last Friday against Fairfield.
On a rain soaked afternoon in Connecticut, the Pioneers (6-9, 3-2 NEC) would get all the offensive support they needed right from the beginning. Just 65 seconds into the affair, reigning Northeast Conference Player of the Year Carisa Eye stick handled through the Siena defense and fired home a shot past Saints goalkeeper Renee Clavette (Danville, N.H./Timberland).
Following the early blow, the Saints (2-10, 1-5 NEC) would battle Sacred Heart throughout the game but were unable to find the back of the Pioneers cage as the tandem of Whitney Mills and Kristen McIntire combined for the shutout.
Clavette had a stellar game between the pipes for the Green and Gold registering ten saves on the afternoon, giving her team a chance to remain within striking distance. Offensively, the Saints were led by forwards Traci Baldwin (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) and Kristin McGorty (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./John Jay) who each tallied two shots apiece.
Sacred Heart held a 28-7 shots advantage for the game, including a 17-0 mark in the first half. The Pioneers also held an edge in penalty corners with eleven to Siena's six.
The Saints will remain in the nutmeg state for the remainder of the weekend as they get set for the middle leg of their regular season ending three game road trip which continues Sunday at Quinnipiac. Game time is slated for noon.
