Once more the Siena volleyball team was tested, and once more the Saints responded decisively. The Saints broke free from a 1-1 tie to shake past rival Marist 3-1 (33-31, 26-30, 30-26 and 3-15) in Poughkeepsie Wednesday night. It was the 10th straight win for the team and sixth win in six league games this year.
Burgandy McCurty posted a match and season high 25 kills as setter April London wisely favored the middle to help the Saints rally. McCurty posted a .622 hitting percentage - impressive numbers that fellow middle Kelly Hummel echoed. Hummel had 12 kills in just 19 attempts, off-setting an unusual off night of serving. Hummel was ranked in the top five in the country in aces per game entering the match.
London fell just shy of a triple-double. Siena's all-time assist leader had nine kills and eight digs to go along with her 56 assists and four aces.
The Saints trailed 22-16 in the first game, but rallied for a 33-31 win. After dropping the second game 30-26, the team earned a 30-26 win in the third and coasted to a 30-15 win in the fourth. It was the second straight match the Saints were on even terms before hitting their stride late.
Senior Nadiege Honore had 14 kills to round out Siena players with double figure kills. Freshman Aubrey Bobo played well in a reserved role. She killed five of her 11 attacks and notched a team-high 12 digs. Bobo has been relegated to the back row after suffering a bicep injury two weeks ago.
Alexandra Schultze led Marist (6-12/2-4 MAAC) with 20 kills. The Red Foxes posted a .265 hitting percentage and equaled Siena's total with seven blocks.
Siena improves to 11-3 on the season and 6-0 in MAAC play. The Saints entered the match with the 36th best winning percentage in the nation. The team returns home to host Niagara and Canisius this weekend. The Saints and Purple Eagles square off in the ARC at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
