Box Score
Loudonville, N.Y. - Monmouth forward Holly Hooven's redirect into the Siena cage with just 34 seconds remaining in the first half gave the Hawks a lead that they would not relinquish in a 1-0 victory over Siena Field Hockey this afternoon at Siena Turf Field. For the Hawks it was their third consecutive conference triumph to begin the season.
In what was an evenly played first half, both teams had numerous scoring chances but goalkeepers Renee Clavette (Danville, N.H./Timberland) of Siena and Monmouth's Melissa Katz made several outstanding saves to keep the game in a scoreless deadlock.
Towards the end of what became a very aggressively played half, Monmouth (4-7, 3-0 NEC) would strike first blood. On a long pass from the left side towards the cage, the ball was deflected several times before trickling over to Hooven who sent it past Clavette for her second goal of the year.
Meanwhile in the second stanza, Siena (1-8, 1-3 NEC) would fight hard and get several scoring opportunities but were unable to cash in on Katz who had a stellar showing with six saves.
The Saints best scoring opportunity would come six minutes into the second half when Hanna LeStrange (Worcester, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) was sent in on a breakaway down the left side but right before she was able to shoot, the ball was knocked off of her stick.
Monmouth held an 18-10 shots advantage in the game, while also securing 19 penalty corners. Annie LoPresti led all Hawks forwards with a whopping nine shots, four of which were on goal. Kristin McGorty (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./John Jay) led the Saints tallying three shots.
The Saints will return to action for the middle game of their three game homestand on Sunday against Rider. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
