Loudonville, N.Y. - Rider forward Tricia Crotty's stellar offensive play and three points led the Broncs to a 3-1 victory over Siena Field Hockey this afternoon at Siena Turf Field. Crotty tallied a total of ten shots, including five shots on goal as the Saints dropped their fourth consecutive decision.
Rider (6-5, 3-0 NEC) jumped out to an early lead just five minutes into the game. Crotty broke down the right side of the field and sent a pass in front to teammate Allison Vogel who quickly redirected the feed to Amanda Barretta who fired a quick shot past Siena goalkeeper Renee Clavette (Danville, N.H./Timberland).
The Broncs would later extend their lead to a 2-0 advantage in the 30th minute. Following a Clavette save, Crotty found herself positioned directly in front of the cage and quickly sent home the rebound for her team leading fifth goal of the season.
Siena (1-9, 1-4 NEC) proved to be resilient however as they would cut the deficit in half in the 42nd minute. On a penalty corner pass from sophomore forward Andrea Caso (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel), teammate Kristin McGorty (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./John Jay) fired a shot that was initially stopped by Broncs goalkeeper Jennifer LoCastro, but the rebound trickled back to Caso on the far side of the goal and she sent it into the cage for her second score of the year.
The comeback however would be short lived as the Broncs would answer back less than a minute and a half later when forward Stephanie Walker broke down the right side one-on-one and struck a shot to the far side past new Saints goalkeeper Jennifer Tesak (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford) to increase the lead back to two.
Siena would have several chances late in the game to retaliate, but were unable to complete the comeback. Rider held a 19-8 shots advantage while the Saints notched nine penalty corners to the Broncs five.
"The outcome does not reflect how much we grew in this game," reflected Head Coach Bill Davidson. "I think this type of game is something that our team needs to build on."
The Saints will return to action for the final game of their three game homestand and final regular season home game of the year when they host Fairfield Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. Pregame festivities honoring Siena seniors Danielle Weill, Anne Linley, Alicia Reagan, Hanna LeStrange, Emily Winslow and Traci Baldwin will be held shortly before the start of the game.
