Loudonville, N.Y. - Loyola forward Phil Bannister connected on the game winning goal in the 38th minute to help lead the top-seeded Greyhounds past #8 Siena (6-10-4) this afternoon in the MAAC Championships quarterfinals at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex. Fellow freshman Eddie Dines managed Loyola's (16-3) second score midway through the second half to secure the victory. With the loss, the Saints are eliminated from the MAAC tournament.
Siena stood tall on the defensive side of the field for the majority of the first half, but with 37:20 on the clock Bannister broke the scoreless tie when collected a rebound in front of the net and sent it past the Saints goalkeeper Steve Skonieczny. Skonieczny finished with one save over 90 minutes of action.
The Saints entered the break facing a 1-0 deficit.
Siena mounted its attack in the second half bombarding Loyola with seven shots to its one. Greyhounds goalkeeper Milos Kocic was solid in net posting a game-high three saves to preserve his 13th shutout of the season.
At the 69:48 mark, Julian Cantillo served a feed to Dines who finished on the play giving Loyola an insurance goal to work with. The score marked Dines eighth of the 2007 campaign.
With the loss, Siena's season comes to a halt. The Saints finish the year with a 6-10-4 overall record and a 2-5-2 conference mark.
