Loudonville, N.Y. - UC-Davis attack Olivia Jarem accounted for a game-high four goals, two of which came in the first half, to lead the Aggies to an 11-8 victory over the visiting Siena women's lacrosse team for their season opener in Davis, California this afternoon.
The Saints (0-1, 0-0) were led offensively by sophomore midfielder Lindsey Rosecrans (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) who, by game's end, amassed three goals in the early season setback. Rosecrans finished the game with four points after adding an assist to her stat sheet. Aiding Rosecrans on offense was junior midfielder Lynn Harkins (Bellmore, N.Y./Holy Trinity) who scored a pair of goals, while senior Christina Pampalone (East Northport, N.Y./Commack), junior Amy Schoonmaker (Simsbury, Conn./Simbury) and freshman Alexandra Kain (Williston, N.Y./Mineola) each tallied a goal for the Saints.
The Aggies opened the game with a blistering offensive attack, as they were responsible for five unanswered goals. Jarem got the offense going just 18 seconds into regulation with an assist from teammate Molly Lapolla. The five-goal stretch was led by attack Patrice Clark, who tallied her two goals of the game on back-to-back strikes coming at the 14:20 and 12:44 marks.
The Saints got on the board at the 5:42 mark when Harkins blew the ball past Aggies' goalkeeper Hilary Harkins to make the score 5-1 in favor of UC-Davis. Rosecrans was credited with the assist.
With the Saints down 6-1 at halftime following a Jarem goal to close the first half of action, the Saints entered the second half scoring two-straight goals fired off the sticks of Pampalone and Schoonmaker. Pampalone answered first for the Saints at the 26:49 mark unassisted, while Schoonmaker followed in pursuit with an unassisted goal of her own at the 22:51 mark.
The Saints would get as close to two goals of the Aggies, who proved to be too much down the stretch, thanks in part to a pair of Jarem strikes as they laid claim to a three-goal victory over the Green and Gold.
The game was evenly played for the most part, as UC-Davis out-shot the Saints, 25-20, while Siena amassed 23 ground balls, compared to the Aggies' mark of 22.
In between the pipes for the Saints was junior goalie Heather Ely who collected nine saves; two more than her counterpart Hilary Harkins, who tallied seven by game's closing.
The Saints conclude their two-game California stop with a visit to Saint Mary's in Moraga on Saturday with action kicking off at 4 p.m. eastern standard time.
