Final Stats
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Senior co-captain Christina Pamplone (East Northport, N.Y./Commack) registered five goals to guide the Saints to a 18-6 victory over Niagara (1-4, 0-1) this afternoon on Siena Field. Siena (2-6, 1-0) received goals from eight different players and ran away with their first league victory of the season. Alexandra Kain (Williston Park, N.Y./Mineola), a freshman midfielder, tallied a game-high six points including four assists. Attackers Ryan Tierney (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Baldwinsville) and Amy Schoonmaker (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) notched three goals apiece in the winning effort.
The Saints jumped out to a 2-0 lead just 40 seconds into the game after receiving back-to-back goals from Kathryn Marcantonio (Schenectady, N.Y./Guilderland) and Pampalone. The Purple Eagles retaliated with three consecutive goals earning their only lead of the contest. Emma-Lee Harrison connected on two free position shots, while Lindsay Hamann notched one to take a 3-2 advantage with 21:29 remaining in the half.
Siena countered with five goals of their own capped off by a Pampalone score at the 10:07 mark. She then managed another goal with 7:18 left in the first half to send the Saints into intermission with an 8-4 advantage.
The second half proved to be all Siena as they rallied for the first nine goals over the opening 22 minutes to take a commanding 16-4 lead. Pampalone got the scoring streak started when she sent a shot into the back of the net with 28:54 on the clock. She was then joined by Lynn Harkins (Bellmore, N.Y./Holy Trinity), Stephanie DiMari (Hicksville, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy), Kain, Tierney and Schoonmaker in the scoring jamboree.
The Saints clamped down defensively in the second half holding Niagara to just two goals over 30 minutes. Junior goaltender Heather Ely (Elbridge, N.Y./Jordan Elbridge) helped anchor the Siena defense and recorded seven saves in the contest. Defenders Sarah Elliott (Shoreview, Minn./Totino-Grace), Leah Ciaccio (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) and Corey Fink (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) dominated on the defensive end holding the Purple Eagles to just 16 shots on the afternoon.
Siena was victorious in the groundball battle as they picked up 35 to Niagara's 16. The Saints also managed to win draw controls going 15-for-36.
With the victory, Siena snaps a three game losing streak and improves to a perfect 1-0 in league play. The Saints return to action on Sunday when they square off with Canisius. Game time is slated for 1 p.m. on Siena Field.
