Final Stats
The Siena women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to Niagara Saturday in the semifinals of the MAAC Championships at the USTA Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows. With the loss, Siena was eliminated from title contention, falling into the consolation round.
The Saints (9-8) dropped the crucial doubles point, falling at second and third doubles by scores of 8-5. The Saints top doubles team of Sarah Mayer and Karina Davis held first doubles.
The two teams split singles competition. Sarah Mayer and Taylor Barvoets each won for Siena at first and second singles respectively. Julianne Prokopich defeated Karina Davis 7-6 (9-7) and 6-3 at #3 singles in what proved to be a pivotal match. Julia Lebedev won 6-3 and 6-1 at #4 singles for the Saints, but the Purple Eagles took the #5 and #6 singles spots to clinch the match.
Siena, the 2006 MAAC Champions, will face #4 Loyola in the third place match at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
