Mayer and Davis Named Captains for 2007 Season

June 4, 2007

Siena women's tennis head coach Tim OBrien has selected senior Karina Davis and junior Sarah Mayer team captains for the 2007 season.

Davis has played at the #1,#2,#3 and #4 positions during her three years at Siena. She led the team to a 2006 MAAC Championship and a trip to the NCAA Division I Championships. She was named to the ALL MAAC Second Team in doubles for 2007. She is currently in Africa as part of the Siena College/Albany Medical College Program in Science, Humanaties and Medicine. She will study abroad in the fall and join the team in 2008.

"Karina demonstrates what being a 'student-athlete' at Siena means," OBrien said. "She has always been a model for the others on the team and leads by example."

Mayer is the only junior to be named captain during OBrien's tenure. Sarah was named both the 2006 MAAC Player of the Year and MAAC Rookie of the Year in 2006. She received Siena College's "NCAA Women in Sports Award" this spring. Mayer and Davis were named to the All MAAC Doubles Team for the second straight year. Mayer was voted to the All MAAC Second Team at #1 singles this fall. She currently holds the Siena women's tennis record for most wins in a season.

"Sarah is the first player I am confident enough in to move into the position of captain as a junior," OBrien said. "She is ready to be the team leader. We will need her leadership immediately this fall as we bring in five new players. I hope this will be her best year at Siena in every way!"
