LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - The Siena women's soccer team dropped its season opener 1-0 to Stony Brook (1-0) this evening in Long Island. Seawolves freshman forward Danielle Tenaglia netted the game winning goal in the eighth minute serving Siena (0-1) its first loss of the season.
The Saints bombarded Stony Brook with a game high 12 shots, but could not connect on one to even the game. Seawolves goaltender Marisa Viola collected six saves between the pipes earning her first shutout of the season. Junior keeper Patti Carroll (Middle Grove, N.Y./Galway) nabbed one save in 90 minutes of action for the Saints.
Siena junior Chelsea Maguire (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) and freshman Tabitha Tice (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) each placed two shots on net only to be corralled by Viola.
With the loss, the Saints fall to 0-1 overall on the season. Siena returns to action on Sunday afternoon when they host Colgate for its home opener. Game time is set for 1 p.m. on Siena Field.
