Final Stats
Loudonville, N.Y. - UMass Freshman Forward Katie Kelly's goal in the 58th minute proved to be the difference maker as the Minutewomen (4-4-0) snuck past Siena 2-1 this afternoon at the Siena Turf Field. The game marked Siena's (0-5-0) inaugural Field Hockey match on their brand new home turf.
In what was a back and forth first half, sophomore midfielder Kristin McGorty (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./John Jay) would give the Saints their first lead of the season. On a penalty corner at the fourteen minute mark, McGorty collected a nice feed from teammate Emily Winslow (Webster, N.Y./Webster-Schroeder) at the top of the circle and was able to weave through several UMass defenders before notching her team leading second goal of the season.
UMass however would strike back quickly just five minutes later. On a long entry pass into the circle from Kara Murphy, Minutewomen midfielder Erin Parker would fire one past Siena goalkeeper Renee Clavette (Danville, N.H./Timberland) to tie the score at one.
In what was an extremely physical second half in which a pair of green cards were issued to both teams, it was UMass who would take the lead. With just under twelve minutes remaining, the Minutewomen would get an odd man rush as midfielder Mary Shea broke down the right side before sending across a bullet pass to Kelly who would deflect the shot past Clavette for what turned out to be the game winning goal.
The Saints would get one final opportunity late in the game with no time remaining but Winslow could not corral a penalty corner pass at the top of the circle as the game would come to an end.
The Saints will return to action next Sunday as they open Northeast Conference play against Robert Morris at Siena Turf Field. Game time is slated for 1:00 p.m.
