LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Bryant scored three unanswered second half goals in a 13 minute span to knock off the Siena field hockey team 3-1 in this afternoon at Siena Turf Field in both team's season finales. Freshman midfielder Mackenzie Smith accounted for Siena's score on a first half penalty stroke.
Prior to the game, the Saints held a special Senior Day ceremony commemorating the Saints' five graduating seniors, Rian Lively, Jennifer Tesak, Meghan Williams, Meredith Yund and Renee Clavette. The Saints' rode the emotion early on, creating numerous scoring opportunities capped off by Smith's goal.
After Smith's initial shot was saved, the rebound attempt was pinned under Bryant goalie Kundayi Mawema causing the whistle for the Saints' first penalty shot attempt of the season. Although Smith misfired on the shot, it still had enough velocity on it to beat Mawema and give the Saints an early 1-0 lead in the fifth minute.
Both teams played a relatively even half for the remainder of the first stanza with the two squads entering intermission tied in shots (5-5) with Bryant holding a slim edge in short corners (6-5).
Siena registered the first two shots of the second half, but the Bryant defense shutout the Saints offense following that, not allowing a shot for the final 23 minutes. Bryant quickly turned that momentum in their favor, tallying 10 of their 15 shots for the game in the final 17 minutes.
The Bulldogs tied it up in the 50th minute when Katherine Andrusin deflected a Danielle Moody shot from the top of the circle by Tesak. After the teams remained tied for the next 12 minutes, Bryant quickly put the game away.
Tia Pydynkowski passed from right to left across the crease, finding Courtney Landi who one-timed a shot into the back of the cage to give Bryant a lead they would not relinquish. The Bulldogs then iced the game only 55 seconds later as Andrusin notched her second goal of the game off a double deflection.
Bryant out-shot the Saints 15-7 for the game and held a 10-6 edge in short corners. Tesak made six saves for Siena, while Mawema recorded four stops for Bryant in earning the victory.
Siena concludes the 2008 season with a 1-16 record while Bryant improves to 2-16.
