Manhattan Holds Off Siena 73-72

Box Score

RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Antoine Pearson made 6-7 3-pointers including all five of his attempts in the second half to lift Manhattan over Siena 73-72 in MAAC action Monday in Riverdale. Kenny Hasbrouck's last second runner came up just short, sending Siena to its second straight league loss.

Hasbrouck's final try came on an out-of-bounds play after both teams called time out. Edwin Ubiles inbounded the ball with 2.3 second left on the opposite side of half court and threw a strike to a cutting Hasbrouck who beat his defender and worked a clean lane to the basket. He was forced to pull up to beat the clock and misfired with a running bank shot.

The miss ended a back-and-forth game that featured 12 ties and 11 lead changes.

Pearson scored 20 points, offsetting a 24-point showing from Siena's steady sophomore Edwin Ubiles.

Manhattan's one-point win equaled its first half lead, 28-27, - the result of a fractious first 20 minutes in which neither team could find its rhythm. By contrast, each team scored 45 points in an entertaining up-and-down second half.

After Siena took a 62-58 lead with 6:45 left on a Ubiles 3, Manhattan scored 15 of the next 20 points to take a 73-67 lead with 1:18 left on a pair of Andrew Gabriel free throws. Pearson had three 3's to highlight the run.

The Saints cut the lead to its final margin in the last minute on a Hasbrouck 3 and a Ronald Moore layup. The game-ending sequence resulted after Darryl Crawford missed a 3 and Alex Franklin corralled Chris Smith's errant follow up with four seconds left.

Franklin scored 12 of his 17 points in the second half and rounded out his sixth double double of the season with 13 rebounds. But the sophomore misfired on five of his eight free throws and Siena shot just 9-17 from the line on the night.

Smith had 13 points and 12 rebounds for Manhattan and Devon Austin added 12 points, seven boards and four assists.

Siena had just seven turnovers, shot 57% from the field in the second half and out-rebounded the Jaspers 39-35. Manhattan responded by making 11-21 3's and turned the ball over just 11 times against Siena's pressure defense. The Jaspers had 16 first half turnovers in a 13-point Siena win in Albany earlier this season.

Siena remains in a tie for first in the MAAC with two games left as a result of Rider's loss at Loyola tonight. The Saints break from MAAC play on Saturday when they take on Boise State in Idaho.
