Final Stats
Loudonville, N.Y. - Matt Girsh, Ryan Duggan, Mike Lashomb and Shaun Dunn all recorded hat tricks but it was not enough as the Saints fell in their road opener by a score of 17-15 at Stony Brook. The defeat was the first of the year for the Green and Gold who fell to 3-1.
In what was a high scoring back and forth battle, the Saints struck first a little more than two minutes in on a Girsh goal. The Seawolves (1-2) however quickly responded with five unanswered goals to take a 5-1 edge just moments into the second.
But Siena gained momentum back scoring seven goals in the second frame to pull even at the half, 8-8.
In the third, the lead traded hands three times with the score eventually nodded at 12 heading into the final period. But in the fourth, Stony Brook erupted for five goals to pull away. Dunn scored his third goal of the game with 1:30 remaining to pull Siena within one (16-15) before the Seawolves' Bo Tripodi tallied his second goal of the fourth in the final minute to ice the game.
Dunn and Girsh each added assists to lead the Saints with four points apiece. Stony Brook's Kevin Crowley led all scorers with a hat trick and three assists.
The Saints won 21 of 36 face-offs and also finished strong in man-up opportunities, converting on three of their nine attempts. Sophomore goalie Brent Herbst also played strong between the pipes, turning aside a season-best 14 shots.
The Green and Gold will look to revisit their winning ways when they continue their three game road swing with the middle game against Saint Joseph's. Game time is slated for 1 p.m. on Saturday from Philadelphia.
