Final Stats
Colgate tallied two goals in the opening nine minutes of action and never looked back in holding off the Siena Field Hockey team 5-1 this evening in the season opener for both squads at Tyler's Field in Hamilton, N.Y. Junior midfielder Kristin McGorty recorded the first score of the 2008 season for the Green and Gold.
The Red Raiders (1-0) opened with a flurry, controlling the action deep in the Siena (0-1) zone for most of the opening half. Mika Ella-Tang got Colgate on the board first, rifling a shot past Siena goalie Renee Clavette just over six minutes into the contest.
The Red Raiders lead ballooned to 2-0 just minutes later, which also proved to be the margin at the half.
Colgate out-shot Siena 14-1 in the opening stanza and recorded six penalty corners to just one for the Saints. Clavette extinguished numerous Red Raider scoring attempts in the opening 35 minutes, recording five crucial saves.
After Colgate extended the lead to 4-0 late in the second half, the Saints answered back to avoid the shutout. McGorty, the Saints active all-time leading scorer, broke down the center of the field and fired a shot from 10 yards out past the Red Raiders goalie for her seventh career goal.
Colgate added a late goal off a penalty corner as time expired to extend the margin of victory to four.
For the game, the Red Raiders out-shot the Saints 20-6, although both teams played a virtually even second half. Rebecca Anderson led the way offensively for Colgate, posting the first two goals of her career, while Alison Waugh and Lauren Carey accounted for the other tallies.
The Saints enjoy nearly a full week off before returning to the Capital Region for a date with Hofstra on Friday evening at 7 p.m. The contest will be held across town at the campus of UAlbany.
