Final Stats
Fairfield's Emily Janis tallied a pair of goals including the game winner as Fairfield cruised past the Siena field hockey team 5-1 this evening in Fairfield, Conn. Freshman forward Sarah Szewczyk scored her first career goal for the Green and Gold in defeat.
Janis notched both of her goals in the first 19 minutes of action to stake the Stags (2-6) to an early 2-0 advantage.
The Saints (0-6) fought back and cut the lead in half at 2-1 just moments before the half. Szewczyk, who was appearing in just her second collegiate game after returning from an injury, found the back of the net with just over a minute before intermission.
Siena had several opportunities early in the second half to try and gain the equalizer, but Fairfield exploded for three second half goals including a pair in the last thirteen minutes to pull away.
Marit Westenberg, Hilary Burns and Amy Hosking picked up the final three Fairfield tallies. Westenberg led the Stags with four shots.
Both of Szewczyk's shots were on goal for Siena, while teammate Kristin McGorty led the way with three total shots.
The Stags outshot the Saints 17-7, although Siena held a 10-7 advantage in penalty corners. The ten corners were a season high for the Green and Gold.
