Loudonville, N.Y. - Holy Cross' Courtney Callahan broke a one all tie with a pair of goals in just over two minutes, propelling the Crusaders to a 3-1 victory over the Siena Field Hockey team this afternoon at Siena Turf Field. Freshman forward Sarah Szewczyk scored her second goal in as many games for the Green and Gold.
Holy Cross (2-5) took advantage of eight first half penalty corners, leading to many of their 13 shots in the opening stanza. However, it was on a broken play when they took a 1-0 lead 18 minutes into the action.
Siena (0-6) goalie Renee Clavette made a kick save off a shot from the Crusaders Kara Gonnerman, but the ball caromed right to the stick of Kristin Schulz who tallied her team-high third goal of the season.
Clavette, however, was strong throughout, posting nine key saves over the duration of the first half. Teammate Jennifer Tesak was equally strong in net for the Saints, notching 10 saves during the second stanza.
The Saints battled back just five minutes into the second frame to nod the game at 1-1. Following a scrum in front of the net, junior midfielder Kristin McGorty pushed the ball onto the stick of Szewczyk who put it in from point blank range.
Despite the momentum at the time being on Siena's side, Holy Cross fought back to change the face of the game. In the 45th minute, Callahan redirected a shot attempt off of a penalty corner into the cage and then added her second score in two minutes off another redirection to put the Crusaders up for good at 3-1.
Holy Cross out-shot the Saints 28-5 and held an 18-5 edge in corners. Schultz led Holy Cross with 10 shots, seven of which were on target.
The Saints return to action Saturday when they open up a four game road trip and face their fourth Patriot League foe this season when they travel to take on Bucknell. Game time is scheduled for 12 noon.
