Final Stats
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Almost a year to the day after she scored the game-winner in double overtime against Monmouth, Caroline Hunnewell did it again. The senior captain tallied the sudden-victory goal in double overtime as the Siena field hockey team defeated Robert Morris 4-3 Sunday afternoon at Siena Turf Field.
Siena (3-9, 1-2) dominated the offensive action throughout the game, but Robert Morris (2-9, 1-3) goalie Stephanie Seeley was sensational throughout, recording 21 saves.
The Saints opened the scoring in the ninth minute when Kristin McGorty fed Jenna Gifford in front who scored her second goal of the season. The Colonials would tie it four minutes later on a similar play when Erica Musson fired home the pass from Kylie McKain.
In what was a back and forth game throughout, Siena answered back to make it 2-1 in the 16th minute on Brittany Moran's fourth goal of the season, before Robert Morris evened it back up in the waning moments of the first half on a Chantele Crow tally.
Crow scored her second goal to give Robert Morris their only lead of the game at 3-2 off a penalty corner with just over seven minutes to go. But the Saints continued to battle back and notched the equalizer when Andrea Caso fired a shot off a Colonial defender that deflected in to tie the game 3-3 with just 5:25 remaining, which sent the game to overtime.
In the extra session, Siena dominated, amassing 13 shots in the 15-minute period, but Seeley stood tall making 10 of her saves in the session to force a second overtime.
But in the second overtime, the Saints wasted no time as McGorty broke in down the left side of the circle and when Seeley came out to cut down the angle, McGorty found Hunnewell on the right side and she fired home the game-winner into the open cage.
The assist, which was McGorty's second of the game, gives her five for the season which is a new Division I single-season high for a Siena player. Additionally, with her two points on Sunday, she now has 28 for her career, tying her with Bernadette Fuchs '88 for ninth on the all-time career scoring list.
Caso tallied a career-high 12 of the Saints shots on goal as they held a 36-14 advantage over the Colonials, while also recording 15 short corners to Robert Morris' seven. The 36 shots marked the highest total by the Saints since turning Division I in 1993.
The Saints will play five of their final six regular season games on the road, beginning with a 3 p.m. start Friday afternoon at Saint Francis.
