Swimming and Diving Splits in Season Opener

Oct. 17, 2009

Final Stats

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - The Siena swimming and diving split its season opening tri-meet, defeating MAAC rival Niagara, 186-110, but fell to New Hampshire, 191.5-102.5 this afternoon at Siena Swim Center. The Wildcats went perfect on the afternoon, defeating Niagara in the other final, 213-85.

"Without a doubt this was the best season-opening performance in my time at Siena," noted head coach Greg Brown. "The team has trained hard over these last five weeks and really showed the fruits of their labors today."

In what was a record-setting afternoon, seven pool records and one program record fell. UNH broke six of the records, while Siena freshman Britney Anderer dismantled the other. Anderer set the new benchmark for both the Siena Swim Center and the program by taking the 100 breast in an impressive time of 1:06.88.

"I was definitely excited to see Britney race against some live competition," added Brown. "To set a school record in her first meet was outstanding and I could not have asked for more."

Sophomore diver Elizabeth Rice also had an outstanding afternoon, capturing the top scores in both 1 and 3M dives. Rice posted scores of 221.15 and 217 respectively.

"What else can you say about Elizabeth," reflected Brown. "Every meet she goes out there and gives us her absolute best effort and she did once again today."

Siena would have set two additional pool records on the afternoon if not for the effort of the Wildcats. The six Siena Swim Center records broken on Saturday by the Wildcats were the most in a single meet by one team in the 11-year history of the facility.

UNH's records came in the 200 medley relay (1:48.96), 100 back (Amy Perrault - :58.77), 50 free (Mallory Morrell - :24.11), 100 free (Shelli Reed - :52.48), 200 IM (Jessica Little - 2:11.36), and 200 free relay (1:38.47).

Siena sophomore Katie Ness was edged out in the 50 free by Morrell, but in her first collegiate meet her time of :24.74 would have also qualified as a new pool record. The other record the Saints would have set at Siena Swim Center if not for the Wildcats came in the 200 medley relay when the team of Ness, Anderer, Kaela Bjornberg and Molly Chamberlain completed the event in 1:49.55.

The Saints open a five-meet road trip next Saturday at Vermont. Events are slated to get underway at 2 p.m. in Burlington, Vt.
