LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Christine Grady and Mackenzie Liptak each enjoyed three-point afternoons as Quinnipiac defeated the Siena field hockey team 3-0 at Siena Turf Field in the Saints' conference opener. The Bobcats improved to 2-8 overall and 1-1 in the NEC with the win, while Siena falls to 2-8 on the season and 0-1 in the conference.
The Bobcats controlled the first half, out-shooting Siena 13-3. Quinnipiac capitalized in the eighth minute off of a penalty corner to take the early lead. After Saints' goalie Renee Clavette made the initial save, Kimberly Cunniff fired a shot that was deflected in by Grady for her first score of the season.
Quinnipiac would make it 2-0 10 minutes before intermission when Grady fed Liptak in front who roofed a shot over the sprawled out Clavette.
Both teams played a relatively even second half and despite the Saints recording 10 total corners, they could not cash in. The Bobcats added a final goal in the 42nd minute when Liptak sent in Bonnie Shea on a breakaway for her second goal of the year.
Quinnipiac out-shot the Saints 18-8, although Siena held a 10-7 edge in corners. Clavette, who continues to lead the nation now with 144 saves, added 11 more to her total.
Jenna Grossman and Amanda DeLouise combined to make five saves for Quinnipiac as the Saints were shutout for the fourth time this season.
The Saints return to action Friday for the middle game of a three-game homestand against defending conference champion Lock Haven. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
