Sophomore Ian Donnelly finished 64th (27:29.1) in the 101st ECAC/IC4A Cross Country Championships Saturday afternoon at Van Cortlandt Park, N.Y. He led the Siena men's cross country team to a 21st place finish in the 8K University Race. Junior Jessica Morelli led the women's team with a 75th place finish as the team placed 20th. It was the final meet of the season for the Siena cross country team.
Donnelly, who has led the men's team in every meet he's run at this season, shaved 51 seconds off his time from the MAAC Championships (28:20.6) on October 30.
"Ian has a great attitude and is a role model for many of the runners on the team," Head Coach Alison Wade said. "Next year, we're aiming to have four or five guys up where Ian is running now. The majority of our top runners are freshmen and sophomores, so they are only going to get better as they adapt to our new training system and get used to running the 8K distance."
Zack Fitzsimmons came in second for the men's team and 155th overall with a time of 29:10.4. Rounding out the top five was Jonathan Duncan (171st - 29:51.9), Phil Hartshorn (179th - 30:05.9) and Joe Abed-El-Latif (180th - 30:10.1).
Morelli ran the 5K in 19:53.0 and paced the women's team for the second straight meet. Freshman Chrissy DelSanto finished 90th with a time of 20:01.0. Brina Seguine (132nd - 20:42.6), Christy Bak (158th - 21:20.7) and Carly Calogero (160th - 21:22.8) completed the top five.
"Jessica Morelli and Chrissy DelSanto went 1-2 for us, both running lifetime bests," Wade said. "Chrissy narrowly missed breaking 20:00 for the first time. One year ago, she was running 22 minutes in the 5k, so she has made a huge leap this season and like many of the runners on our team, still has a great deal of untapped potential."
