STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Siena women's basketball led Wagner for most of the game, but made just three field goals in the final nine minutes and lost 63-55 in a non-conference game Tuesday evening in Staten Island, N.Y. Senior guard Allie Lindemann led the team in scoring (14 points) for the second straight game.
Wagner's (1-3) Sha'Ron Harrison scored the first basket of the game at the 18:45 mark and Lindemann responded on the next possession with a 3-pointer and made the free throw for the four-point play. It was Wagner's only lead until nine minutes left in the game. Lindemann had the hot hand in the first half, shooting 4-for-6 from the field and 2-for-3 from 3 to lead all players with 11 points.
Siena (0-3) led 28-22 at the half. The low scoring was attributed to Siena's turnovers (13) and Wagner's poor shooting from 3-point range (1-for-13).
Many of Siena's turnovers were offensive fouls. The Saints were whistled for 11 fouls and Wagner was in the double bonus with 6:42 left in the half. Three of Siena's forwards (Serena Moore, 2; Sarah Fullmer, 2; and Sara Parnell, 3) were all in foul trouble.
Fullmer started scoring inside at the start of the second half. She made three of her first four shots to give Siena a 36-33 lead with 15:30 remaining.
With 11:30 left in the game, Cathy Cockrum pulled in a rebound and heaved a long outlet pass to Maja Gerlyng flying down the left side. Gerlyng took it in for the easy layup and a 45-40 lead.
Two minutes later, sophomore Cristina Centeno drove and dished to Fullmer who knocked down the open jumper. But Marie-Laurence Archambault drilled a 3-pointer on the next possession to give her team its first lead since the opening minutes.
With the score tied at 50, Siena inbounded the ball under Wagner's hoop, but the pass was thrown over Merrick Volpe's head and Ashley Olsen grabbed the loose ball and scored the go-ahead basket.
Wagner played 11 minutes of the game in the double bonus. The Seahawks made 16-of-20 free throws in the second half and 9-of-10 in the final five minutes to seal the victory.
After shooting 4-for-8 from 3 in the first half, the Saints went 0-for-7 from beyond the arc in the second half.
Moore finished with 11 points for her third double-digit game of the season. Cockrum led the team with seven rebounds.
The Saints return to action Friday when they face Northern Arizona in the NAU Thanksgiving Classic. Game time is scheduled for 8:35 p.m. Eastern.
