Saints Sunk in Final Second

Sept. 12, 2009

Final Stats

With one second remaining in the first overtime period, Longwood defender Andrea Bastiaanse fired home the sudden-victory goal, stunning the Siena field hockey team 3-2 this afternoon in a neutral site affair in Philadelphia, Pa. The Saints fell to 1-4 with the defeat, while the Lancers improved to 2-3.

The teams exchanged three goals during the opening minutes amdist an offensive flurry. Longwood's Olga Knop put the Lancers up first just 4:57 into the action before the Saints erupted to not only answer back, but take the lead.

A pair of senior captains combined to move the Saints into a 1-1 tie in the eighth minute. Andrea Caso fed Caroline Hunnewell in front who found the back of the cage for her first tally of the season.

Moments later Caso was at it again setting up her teammates. This time she found junior Brittany Moran who cashed in on her first career goal, catapulting the Green and Gold to a 2-1 lead midway through the first half.

The Saints maintained their advantage at halftime, despite being out-shot 12-4. Goalie Renee Clavette made nine saves during a busy first half to keep Siena ahead.

The Saints remained in the lead until there was 17:40 left in regulation. The Lancers' Julia Hernandez struck home an unassisted goal that nodded the game at 2-2 and forced overtime.

In the extra session, it appeared as if the game would go on to a second overtime period, but the Lancers would end things right there. With just one second remaining on the clock, Bastiaanse took a feed from Kelsey Turner and buried it in the back of the cage, sending the Saints to a heartbreaking defeat.

Longwood controlled the offensive action for most of the game, out-shooting Siena 28-8 while also holding a 7-5 edge in penalty corners.

Clavette came up big again making 17 more saves and has amassed the three highest save total contests in her career over the last three outings. Clavette, who has stopped a total of 56 shots over that time, now has totaled 340 saves over her career to move her into fourth on the Saints' all-time list.

Longwood's Amy Lewis made five saves in goal to earn the win, while Knop led the Lancers with five total shots.

The Saints look to redeem themselves tomorrow afternoon in Philadelphia when they battle host LaSalle. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
