UMass Defeats Men's Soccer, 2-0

Sept. 26, 2009

Final Stats

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - UMass forward Mark DeSantis scored in the 11th minute and the Siena men's soccer team could not break through the opposing defense, losing 2-0 Saturday afternoon at Siena Turf Field. Siena outshot UMass 20-14 but goalkeeper Shane Curran-Hays made eight saves to shutout the Saints.

DeSantis scored the eventual game winning goal when he received a pass at the top of the box and side volleyed it past Phil Chabot and into the left side netting. Siena's (4-3-1) best chance in the first half came from the individual effort of freshman Emery Welshman in the 21st minute. He dribbled through three defenders across the top of the box, but sent his shot right into the chest of Curran-Hays.

UMass (2-1-3) added to its lead less than a minute into the second half. Ben Arikian played a dangerous ball from the left side into the box and it curled inside the right post for the goal. The 2-0 lead was all the Minutemen needed as they lead the Atlantic 10 in goals allowed (4) and GAA (0.71).

Junior midfielder Sebastien Anzevui had an opportunity to cut the deficit in half with a free kick in the 56th minute. From three yards outside the box, he bent his shot around the wall towards the near post, but it landed harmlessly in the outside of the side netting. Anzevui led all players with five shots.

Chabot (2-2-1) made six saves in the loss.

Siena returns to action this Tuesday when it plays at Boston College. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
